Coactivate NYC has organized a bike mapping of the New York City Neighborhoods. Orchestrated by connectingnyc.org, the bike mapping is meant to organize a community to support the concept of the .NYC domain as a resource.

Thomas Lowenhaupt is the man behind connectingnyc. He has been deeply involved in the process for years. His vision is to protect the .NYC tld as a resource for growth of the cities digital identity.

Mr Lowenhaupt has expressed frustration with the handling of the .NYC registry application of late. He was disappointed to see the contract negotiations and finalization with the registry technical operators to have seemingly been held behind closed doors.

Continue reading »]]> The City of New York has selected its registry partner for operation of the dotNYC Top Level Domain.

Neustar will be operating the .NYC registry in a revenue sharing deal with the city.

The .NYC TLD will be reserved for use by ‘individuals, businesses, or organizations with “a substantive and lawful connection to the city”‘ according to this article by informationweek.com.

Though official policy and verification requirements have not been published the article reports that:

“Criteria for proving a presence in New York City include regularly performing lawful activities such as selling goods or services; maintaining an office or other facility in the city for lawful business, noncommercial, educational, or governmental purposes; and/or performing lawful activities outside of the New York City that are primarily directed toward residents, tourists, businesses, or organizations within the city.”

This criteria can be broadly interpreted and could possibly be enforced through a simple policing of content on second level domains.

It is possible that registration requirements for second level names will not be restrictive, that individuals and businesses in any part of the world may register and use .NYC names, so long as the business, information and content relate to the City of New York.

Additionally it seems the City will receive 40% of the revenues and be guaranteed at least $3.6 million dollars from Neustar in the first five years of operation through varying channels.
