.NYC – How Can It Be?
Get Ready, Get Set – Go .NYC
Getting the .NYC top level domain name started was not an easy feat – not as easy as purchasing a domain name from the net. It took considerable planning with a great amount of input from different sectors with businesses, private organizations, institutions and many others lending a voice and a hand in evaluating the .NYC Top Level Domain. Now that the .NYC has a green light and once it’s officially available to the public, certain processes must be followed to ensure a fair and secure way of registering domain names.
New Yorkers will finally get the chance to have their own domain name, and this will greatly impact commerce, communications and the way New Yorkers live. A renewed spotlight will shine down on New York City again through .NYC.
Easing on Down the Road to the .NYC Launch
For almost a decade now, the City of New York has been waiting for its Top Level Domain (TLD) which will ultimately reflect the city’s own name. It started out as a RFI or Request for Information through the city’s Department of Technology and Telecommunications which inquired into the possibility of a .NYC domain name. Several US companies responded to the call along with .NYC advocates and proponents Connecting.nyc and dotnyc. After much planning and evaluation, .NYC is closer to becoming a reality.
From here, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a corporation that is focused on keeping the internet secured, took on the task of making the .NYC dream a reality.
New Yorkers, Get Ready
So when can the average New Yorker acquire his own .NYC domain? .NYC domains should be available for sale to the public by early 2013. Considering the time it took to conceptualize it and turn it into reality, several more months of waiting is not bad. As per ICANN rules, trademark and brand owners get to have the first shot at the new domain name. This process can take several months but then again, it’s worth the wait. Once ICANN finishes with all the trademark and brand name registration, anyone can get their .NYC domain name. To do this, all New Yorkers have to do is apply for a domain name via a domain name registrar like Register.com. That’s how simple it is.
Many people are excited about the new domain name. Can you blame them? With only several months to wait, the excitement is bound to rise. Get not only .NYC bragging rights, open yourself and your business to the world New York!
